Compression Garment 101

Here at The Garment Shop, we see customers for multiple types of compression needs. Our top requests for compression garments include Plastic Surgery Recovery, Venous Insufficiency, Diabetes and Lymphedema. Many patients will be prescribed garments by their physician in order to provide compression for an affected limb. The garments primary purpose is to help move fluid from accumulating in the limb.

We have a Certified Fitter to measure you for the proper fit and sizing of the garment. We do our utmost to educate our customer/patient on the garments they need, and offer guidance useful for compliance. We understand that in most cases, you will be wearing your garments for a lifetime. We will discuss fabric options and accessories available for a more comfortable fit. We offer donning devices and suggest “tricks of the trade” to assist in the ease of taking on/off the garments, as well as how to best care for your garment. Our Fitter is here to assist you every step of the way to get you into the appropriate garment for your medical needs.

There are three main types of garment materials: circular knit, flat knit, and wraps.

Circular knit stockings are commonly used for patients with tired, achy legs, post-vein procedures or mild to moderate arm swelling. They are usually *RTW or *OTS and come in a variety of different styles of socks and stockings and come in standard sizes.

The post-surgery recovery garment is a medical grade circular knit to promote fast healing. It utilizes a 4-way stretch for easy movement, making your recovery as painless as possible.

Flat knit garments are ideal for most patients with lymphedema. They are usually custom made, offer excellent containment, and are available in a variety of styles and compression grades.

Compression wraps are inelastic garments and are generally used as an alternative to bandages, delivering high working pressure to manage edema. Wraps can be worn daytime and nighttime, and are easier to take on and off which promotes customer independence and compliance.

*Note that the terms Ready-To-Wear (RTW) and Off-The-Shelf (OTS) refers to non-custom garments that are available in standard sizes. The terms Custom Made or Made-To-Measure refer to garments that are made specifically to the measurements of an individual patient.
